Newly Widowed (article AdNews 10/01/07)

Losing my husband recently was the most traumatic experience of my life.
I decided to come to one of my favourite places – Hastings . There is something about this place that haunts me. I can’t tell you what it is, only that it is a feeling everyone gets about a special place in their lives.

I booked into the Lavender and Lace on All Saints Road, to be greeted by Tina who bubbles with personality. Tina showed me to my room.

When you are lost, and all alone, it’s the little things that make the difference. It’s the low beamed warm rooms. The sheets that feel like Egyptian Cotton. The bubble bath from “The Sanctuary”. It’s the breakfast room that feels like a private parlour. The little things. That’s what makes the whole.

Only if you have lost someone, you will know how much the little things count.

Having spent the afternoon walking the seafront, being buffeted by the wind, I came across the pier – ‘closed’. What a tragedy to the heart.

I feel for Hastings.

The evening draws in. Even a woman alone has to eat. Do you dress up or do you go casual? The rules have changed. Jeans – comfortable, nice top – dressed up. Walk up and down the Old Town , looking into the windows. Its all about feelings. I feel so sad that because so much of Hastings is closed that it’s a challenge.

I take a deep breath and walk into “The Dragon Bar” in George Street . First impressions, student bar. Shoulders back. Walk to the bar. Sit on very comfortable bar stool and order my drink. Look at the chalk board menu behind the bar and order the Cajan and lime sea bass with coconut rice and stir fried vegetables – Well! Unbelievable!

The bar is filling. Everyone is comfortable. If there is one thing that you need as A Woman Alone, it’s comfortable. The music fits, the meal superb. It’s not a ‘student bar’ at all. It’s a wonderful warm oasis.

If this is my road to recovery – walk on.

Thank you Hastings .
